上堂舉僧問雲門大師。如何是超佛越祖之談。門云胡餅。師云。雲門老子能施設。胡餅佛祖俱超越。哆哆和和兩片皮。狤狤獠獠三寸舌。不是特地展家風。也非投機應時節。生鐵鑄成無孔鎚。忒團圞兮難下楔。諸禪德。且道。天童今日是下楔不下楔。明眼人辨取。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "A monk asked Great Master Yunmen, 'What is the talk that transcends Buddhas and ancestors?' Yunmen said, 'Sesame cake.'" The Master said: "Old Yunmen was skilled at setting it forth: / Sesame cake, Buddhas, and ancestors are all transcended. / Babbling and muttering with two skin flaps, / Gibbering and jabbering with a three-inch tongue. / It is not deliberately displaying the family style, / Nor is it matching the capacity to meet the season. / Cast of pig iron into a holeless hammer, / So completely round, it's hard to drive in a wedge. / Venerable Chan practitioners, tell me: does Tiantong drive in a wedge today or not? Let clear-eyed people discern it!"
