4.18

上堂云。溶溶曳曳山上雲。潺潺湲湲山下水。試問其間雲水人。更於何處求諸己。諸禪德。心無所住。則法離見聞。智無所緣。則道超情謂。靈雲只麼悟桃華。三十年癡今日慧。諸人分上。又作麼生。眼裏無筋一世貧參。

Ascending the hall, the Master said: "Drifting and wafting, the clouds upon the mountain; / murmuring and babbling, the water below the mountain. / I venture to ask the cloud-and-water people therein: / where else would you seek yourselves? Good Zen practitioners! When the mind abides nowhere, phenomena are free from seeing and hearing; when wisdom has no object, the Way transcends sentiment and conception. Lingyun just thus awakened to peach blossoms—thirty years of foolishness, today's wisdom! What about on your own parts? One without tendons in his eyes is poor for a lifetime. Go practice!"
