上堂舉。劉鐵磨訪溈山。山云。孝牸牛汝來也。磨云。來日臺山大會齋。和尚還去麼。山放身臥。磨便出。師云。劉鐵磨見紫湖。喫拄杖而來便能通變。大溈山參百丈。踢淨瓶之後。具此神通。語默俱到。彼此同風。且道。二老宿游踐處作麼生。還會麼。但得琴中意。何勞絃上聲。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: Liu Tiemo visited Guishan. Guishan said: "Old Cow, you have come!" Tiemo said: "Tomorrow there is a great vegetarian feast on Mount Wutai; will the Venerable go?" Guishan threw down his body and lay down. Tiemo then went out.
The Master said: "When Liu Tiemo met Zihu, she received the staff and came, thus able to adapt and transform. When Great Guishan studied with Baizhang, after kicking over the water pitcher, he was endowed with this spiritual penetration. Speech and silence both arrived; each shared the same style. But tell me: how was the ground where the two old adepts walked? Do you understand? Just get the meaning within the zither; why labor over the sounds upon the strings?"
