Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "What is the single color of great achievement?"
The Master said: "Completely transcending without shadow or trace, not falling into the functioning of past or present."
The monk said: "What is the single color before the upright position?"
The Master said: "Ever equal with the phenomena of the ten directions; able to stand solemn and imposing in all places."
The monk said: "The myriad phenomena share a single seal; the whole body is plainly revealed across the entire realm."
The Master said: "If it is truly like this, then that is fine."
The Master then brought up: Jingqing asked Caoshan: "How is it when moss grows on the mind's path?"
Caoshan said: "A person of the Way is hard to find."
Jingqing said: "Where has he gone?"
Caoshan said: "One only sees the moss growing; one does not know where he has gone."
The Master said: "To clarify the essential teaching within words is easy; to discern the target within the essential teaching is difficult. You must reach this very juncture before you can attain it. When color turns, the body is not seen; when achievement is forgotten, the position is not known. How admirable is the great master craftsman who shaved away the mud without harming the ancestral master's three-foot nose! After the children and grandchildren have gone, with whom will you guard pure poverty? When the ministers and subjects retreat, it is difficult to call oneself honored and noble alone."
