Presenting the Dharma-transmission document, he ascended the hall. A monk asked, "The illuminating light of the world I do not ask about; what is the affair of transmitting the family's purity?" The Master said, "Purity contains the whale's ocean wide; cold shoots across the toad-wheel narrow." The monk said, "Water flows by the bamboos, issuing green; wind passes through the flowers, bringing fragrance." The Master said, "You must believe that at the Dragon Gate there are no overnight guests." The monk said, "Without breaking the cassia branch, I embrace it together with the moon and come." The Master said, "You must also personally arrive once before you attain it." The Master then said, "One cannot conceal that there is a head. At that time you implicated others; right now others implicate you. Being born into my family, our karma and activities are similar. Needle and thread stitch together, the finest of the fine. Kāśyapa and Ānanda do not know each other; each person abides in their own samādhi. Within this one turns one's merit; on this side one gains playful samādhi. In the end, one still must reach the root and stem: gazing into the distance until the dark wild goose has nowhere left in autumn, a vast single color where sky meets water."
