4.51

上堂舉僧問雲門。殺父殺母。佛前懺悔。殺佛殺祖。向甚麼處懺悔。門云露。師云。露超宗越祖。人言渠爇返魂香。我道伊撾塗毒鼓。苦苦更若。咬文嚼字。規行矩步。上唱下隨。前瞻後顧。張三裹帽新有錢。富漢不是恁麼做。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: A monk asked Yunmen, "Killing father and killing mother, one repents before the Buddha. Killing Buddha and killing patriarchs, where does one repent?" Yunmen said, "Exposed."
The Master said: "'Exposed' transcends the school and surpasses the patriarchs. People say he burned incense that revives souls; I say he struck a drum smeared with poison. Bitter, bitter! If you further chew words and gnaw phrasing, tread the compass and pace the square, the superior singing and the inferior following, looking ahead and glancing behind—Zhang the Third wears a hat now that he newly has money; a truly rich man does not act like this."
