At an informal gathering, a monk asked, "I recall that Master Furong had four turning phrases. What is 'the wondrous song that does not involve the tongue'?" The Master said, "The hibernating lair does not open; the dragon has no dragon-phrase." The monk said, "Reaching the ultimate of the profound and subtle, there is no further reliance." The Master said, "Following along to where it comes from, it was originally not a shadow; distinctly returning on the path, the bird's way is profound." The monk said, "What is 'the dead snake startled out of the grass'?" The Master said, "Even coming like that does no harm." The monk said, "When the hand points to space, heaven and earth turn; on the return path, the stone horse leaves the gauze cage." The Master said, "Horns have grown on the head." The monk said, "How can one avoid this error?" The Master said, "Tiantong wishes to avoid this error and not let it encumber the descendants." The monk said, "If so, then it is dead through and through." The Master said, "Was what was said just now a dead phrase or a living phrase?" The monk said, "First, one must not open; second, one must not face it." The Master said, "This again is drilling tortoiseshell and striking tiles." The monk said, "What is 'the withered bones singing when pierced by a needle'?" The Master said, "Right here, waking awareness first stirs; at that time, there are grounds for the news." The monk said, "The head wears the midnight moon; the feet tread upon the golden ground." The Master said, "What idle talk is this coarse fellow speaking?" The monk said, "What is the fine matter?" The Master said, "A point of spiritual rhinoceros horn communicates. You must proceed like this." The monk said, "What is 'the iron saw dancing the Santai'?" The Master said, "Those sitting sit and enjoy; those standing stand and take charge." The monk said, "All stars bow toward the North; all waters flow toward the East." The Master said, "A thousand leagues, ten thousand leagues—no connection at all." The monk said, "The Southern Dipper seven, the Northern Dipper eight." The Master said, "If you had been like this earlier, it would have been somewhat better." The Master then said, "A patch-robed monk's conduct moves all around; a patch-robed monk's transformations adapt smoothly. Sitting dead through and through, cloudless for ten thousand leagues—is it not merely proceeding like this? Therefore it is said: 'Even in the clear sky and bright sun, one still deserves a beating.' One must have a living path right here; no movement is needed, nor any calling out. Precisely when chaos is not yet divided, only then does one see the bare pillar conceive. If one sees through it at that time, one will have phrases that transcend Vairocana and surpass Śākyamuni. In that realm, distinguishing like this, illuminating like this, understanding like this, comprehending like this—at that time, one road opens, allowing you to take charge; releasing a single thread, allowing you to shoulder it. Turning your head to gaze back at your original home, you have already moved your steps. If you see through the place where steps are moved and heads are turned, only then will you know: coming through from within is where a patch-robed monk walks, where a patch-robed monk achieves realization. Have you ever been so completely clear? If you make further changes and further clear the way, you will then see it following along. As soon as you step past the threshold, you enter the world: complete in every matter, fully endowed in every phenomenon. Therefore Master Furong said: 'The wondrous song does not involve the tongue'—what use is the three-inch [tongue]? A clear person nods and knows its presence as soon as it is raised. He also said: 'The dead snake startled out of the grass'—where could it burst forth or break through? On the path of the unborn, it nonetheless lives forever. 'The withered bones singing when pierced by a needle'—speaking a phrase right here, opening a path within it, pointing it open and distinguishing it clearly: this is the time of taking charge within. 'The iron saw dancing the Santai'—arriving here, it manifests everywhere, is perfected everywhere, functions everywhere, and transcends everywhere. 'Phenomenon by phenomenon penetrates; thing by thing is illuminated. The attained person must know to be startled in the dark.' If you see through like this, our family's bowl bag has a place to be entrusted. If it is not yet so, Tiantong's bowl bag is not yet to be entrusted. Take care."
