小參僧問。如何是和尚親切為人底句。師云。文彩未痕。初消息難傳際。僧云。可謂虛明自照。不勞心力。師云。卓卓不倚物。靈靈那涉緣。僧云。莫便是十成底時節也無。師云。透過那邊看。方有出身路。僧云。揭開金鎖裏頭看。隱隱風光元自異。師云。不是那邊事。僧云。如何是那邊事。師云。瑠璃殿上行。撲倒須粉碎。

Informal gathering. A monk asked, "What is the Master's intimate phrase for instructing people?" The Master said, "Before patterns have formed a mark; the juncture where the first news is difficult to convey." The monk said, "It may be called empty clarity shining of itself, without expending mental effort." The Master said, "Lofty and unreliant on things; numinous, how could it involve conditions?" The monk said, "Might that not be the time of complete perfection?" The Master said, "Look penetrating through that side; only then is there a way out." The monk said, "Unlocking the golden lock and looking inside, the faint scenery is originally distinct." The Master said, "It is not the affair of that side." The monk said, "What is the affair of that side?" The Master said, "Walking upon the lapis lazuli palace; if you stumble and fall, you must be shattered to powder."
