West of the vast ocean stands an ancient monastery; / Coming, one treads the bird's path; returning, one climbs the cloud ladder. / The monastic grove sets the model; patch-robed companions seek lodging; / Regulations are aroused; compasses and rulers are aligned. / Encircling the twelve peaks, the azure hue is lustrous; / The great mansion gathers the multitude; storied towers touch the empty sky. / Who gave this pure donation? Our Lord of Gaoping; / An enduring vessel for the Dharma cave, Mount Deng offered its bronze. / Hollow within, solid without, proclaiming clarity to break obscurity; / Welcoming the toad to the portal, sending the crow down Mount Dai. / Struck by the mallet in due season, the sound spreads without hindrance; / In a single thought turning hearing around, all dusts are at ease. / Meeting together from the ten directions, they obey this single chime: / Blossoms and bees, mutton and ants, wind and tiger, cloud and dragon. / Hosts and guests in proper order, lodging and meals harmonized; / Trim and neat are the Dharma's sons, grand and magnificent is the Buddha's school. / The moon descends, the night grows late; frost is pure, the dawn is chill; / The golden jug ceases its chime; the jade clepsydra's moisture runs dry. / The deep awakening on the dream-pillow is the Chan school's correct contemplation: / Movement follows in its wake; stillness grasps its beginning. / The subtle and wondrous sound has no place to be sought; / Entrusted to this great chime, it guides those plunged in darkness. / Clanging upon the ear, coolly it washes the mind; / The spirit responds in the valley; the wind carries it through the forest. / Faintly and gradually, hearing is turned back to its origin; / Sense faculties and dusts lose their pairing; the nature of awakening encompasses emptiness. / To grasp it is never enough; to let it go leaves more than plenty; / True clarity is distinct; pure wisdom is thusness. / Struck, it sounds forth, rolling thunder and roaring whale; / Right on the spot completely extinguished, right on the spot born anew. / The butterfly transformation's shadow disperses; the karmic debt of fish is purified; / Mountains and seas are firm and deep; heaven and earth become level.
