蒼棱羼顏。璠璵蘊石而輝山。老節歲寒。琥珀抱松而永年。
威音未興之際。混沌欲鑿之前。
叢林大義兮道尊百丈。剎海平潮兮月現三千。
我為爾說法。爾為我開田。據坐松根石頭上。
知音人信默心傳。

A dark, rugged countenance and weathered face;
Like precious jade hidden in rock, illuminating the mountain.
Old integrity in the cold of the year;
Like amber embracing the pine, lasting for years.
At the juncture before Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja arose,
Before the primordial chaos was about to be chiseled.
The great righteousness of the monastic grove: the Dao revered by Baizhang;
The tidal waters smoothed across the sea: the moon manifested across the three thousand worlds.
I expound the Dharma for you;
You open fields for me.
Sitting firmly on a stone at the root of a pine,
A true confidant trusts the silent transmission from mind to mind.
