On the memorial day of the Great Sage Bodhisattva, ascending the hall, he offered incense and said: "This pinch of incense is offered for the anniversary of the parinirvāṇa of the Great Sage, Equal Compassion, Universally Illuminating, Bright Awakening, State Master Bodhisattva, to repay his radiant grace and adorn his holy transformation. Moreover, the Bodhisattva's coverage and support share the same Dao; through the three periods of time he extends the body of single suchness. His transformation covers living beings; in the ten directions he manifests responsive and transformative bodies. His Dao exercises equal compassion; his wisdom can illuminate universally. His holy power supports the ancestral shrines; his true mind expands the doctrinal gates. He vowed to fulfill the knowledge of all aspects together with all sentient beings." Then taking his seat, he instructed the assembly, saying: "When due to be born, not born, borrowing light to manifest thirty-six responses; when due to cease, not ceased, forgetting illumination to gather in hundreds of thousands of millions of bodies. Just as when coming and going are cut off and there is neither motion nor stillness, just at such a time, where do you see the Great Sage Bodhisattva?" After a long pause he said: "Sitting upright in the hall, how could he turn to functions at the two ends?"
