Ascending the hall, [the Master] said, "The ten thousand functions cease, the thousand sages do not carry [one]. Parents are not my kin; all buddhas are not my way. A genuine patch-robed monk, arriving here, has a single path of life: directly, arising and ceasing cannot move him, distinctions cannot turn him. Turning one's back on dust to unite with enlightenment; conforming to things to tally with the spirit. All buddhas and sentient beings are fundamentally equal. Great assembly, since they are equal, why are all buddhas of eternal virtue, while sentient beings are not yet so? And tell me: where is the discrepancy? Night travel is not permitted; one must arrive by daybreak. Investigate!"
