He cited: A monk asked Dongshan: “’Constantly wipe it clean with diligence, and do not let it gather dust’—why did he not obtain the robe and bowl?” Shan said: “Even granting it were said, ‘Originally there is not a single thing,’ he still should not obtain the robe and bowl. Tell me, what kind of person should obtain it?” The monk offered ninety-six turning words, but none tallied. At the very end, he said: “Supposing it were brought forward, he would also not receive it.” Shan deeply approved. / Xuedou said: “Since his not receiving it is having eyes, bringing it forward must surely be blindness.” / The Master said: “Changlu would not do so. It must definitely be brought forward: if it is not brought forward, how could one know it is not received? It must definitely not be received: if it were not unreceived, how could it avoid being brought forward? The one who brings it forward must surely have eyes; the one who does not receive it is truly blind. Do you understand? When illumination is exhausted, the substance has no reliance; the entire body accords with the Great Way.”
