[The Master] cited Muzhou instructing the assembly: "Tearing apart is up to me; gathering together is also up to me." A monk asked, "What is tearing apart?" Zhou said, "Three times nine is twenty-seven; bodhi, nirvāṇa, suchness, liberation, mind itself is buddha. I speak thus for now; what do you say?" The monk said, "I do not speak thus." Zhou said, "The bowl falls to the ground; the saucer breaks into eight pieces." The monk said, "What is gathering together?" Zhou folded his hands and sat. The Master said, "Muzhou's functioning was truly long in three and short in five, seven vertical and eight horizontal—thrust before your face, thrown behind your head. It is indeed extraordinary. Nevertheless, setting up the threshold is one family's style; but deep discourse entering the principle falls more than a hundred paces short."
