[The Master] cited: At the assembly of the Śūraṅgama[-sūtra], the World-Honoured One addressed the assembly, saying: “If that which is able to deduce is your mind, then you are mistaking a thief for your child.” Mountain Master Xiu said: “If that which is able to deduce is not your mind, then you are mistaking your child for a thief.”
The Master said: “Examining it right now: is it child or is it thief? When buying a hood look at the head; when eating fish remove the bones.”
