[The Master] cited: Dongshan offered the phrase, saying: “Only when one has embodied the person who goes beyond the buddhas does one have a share of speech.” A monk asked: “What is the person who goes beyond the buddhas?” Dongshan said: “Not a buddha.” Fayan said: “Expediently called a buddha.”
The Master said: “How far apart are the two venerable elders? Truly like blades of swords resembling one another, yet what can be done about the disparity between fish and Lu? Arriving here, one must turn the mechanism beyond the kalpas, release the arrow before the wind, crosswise bear the burden with one's body, and throw open the hands to take responsibility. Only when endowed with such eyes will it do. Can you still discern it? It is easy to distinguish white powder in snow, but hard to discern charcoal in ink.”
