[The Master] cited: Shitou's Harmony of Difference and Sameness says: ‘Interpenetration and non-interpenetration.’ A monk asked Yunmen: “What is interpenetration?” Yunmen pointed to the edge of the wooden seat and said: “It cannot be called the edge of the seat.” The monk said: “What is non-interpenetration?” Yunmen said: “This is the edge of the seat.”
The Master said: “Shitou's tongue had no bone; Yunmen's eyes had sinews. Down through a thousand ages, their voice and light shine brilliantly. Nowadays, if you want to hold hands and walk together, you must first understand thus before you understand not thus; only then is there no connection. Do you understand thoroughly? In youth one once decided the dragon-and-snake battle array; grown old and decrepit, one still joins in children's songs.”
