[The Master] cited: Tripiṭaka Master Da'er had attained the supernormal power of knowing others' minds. He came to court to see Emperor Suzong. The Emperor ordered National Teacher Zhong to test him. When the Tripiṭaka Master saw the National Teacher, he made bows and stood aside on the right. The National Teacher said: ‘Have you attained the knowledge of others’ minds, or not?’ The Tripiṭaka Master said: ‘I would not dare [claim so].’ The National Teacher said: ‘Tell me, where is this old monk right now?’ The Tripiṭaka Master said: ‘The Master is the teacher of a whole country, why are you watching the boat race in Xichuan?’ The National Teacher asked again: ‘Tell me, where is this old monk right now?’ The Tripiṭaka Master said: ‘The Master is the teacher of a whole country, why are you on Tianjin Bridge watching monkeys play?’ The National Teacher asked a third time: ‘Where is this old monk right now?’ The Tripiṭaka Master did not know where he went. The National Teacher shouted: ‘This wild fox spirit! Where is your knowledge of others’ minds?’
The Master said: “Setting aside for a moment that the Tripiṭaka Master did not see the National Teacher—tell me, did the National Teacher himself know where he landed? If you say he knew himself, then a hundred birds holding flowers in their beaks and all the devas making offerings would never cease. And tell me: just at such a moment, where did he land?”
