[Hongzhi] cited: Xuefeng and Sansheng were walking along, and saw a troop of monkeys. Xuefeng said, "Every one of these monkeys is an ancient mirror." Sansheng said, "Nameless through countless kalpas, how can they be displayed as ancient mirrors?" Xuefeng said, "A flaw has appeared." Sansheng said, "A good friend to one thousand five hundred people, yet you do not even recognise the crux of the words!" Xuefeng said, "This old monk's administrative affairs as abbot are troublesome." The Master [Hongzhi] said, "If at that time one had seen Xuefeng say, 'A flaw has appeared,' one should just step forward and say, 'Yes, yes.' And tell me, why is it like this? Vying for it is not enough; yielding it leaves plenty to spare."
