[The Master] cited: Xuedou cited an ancient worthy who said, "Sand cannot be put into the eye; water cannot be put into the ear. If suddenly there is a fellow who believes thoroughly and holds fast, not being deceived by others—what sizzling bowl-sound are the verbal teachings of the Buddhas and patriarchs? He may just hang up his almsbowl bag on high, break his staff, and surely become an unconcerned person of the Way." He also said, "Mount Sumeru can be put into the eye; the water of the great ocean can be put into the ear. Such a fellow accepts discussion with others; the verbal teachings of the Buddhas and patriarchs are like a dragon getting water, like a tiger relying on a mountain. He must shoulder his almsbowl bag and carry his staff horizontally—he too is an unconcerned person of the Way." He further said, "Like this won't do; not like this won't do either. Afterward, there is no relation. Among these three unconcerned persons of the Way, select one to be your teacher." The Master said, "Cutting off heaven and earth, establishing worlds, softening the light and mingling with the dust—each has its strength. Tell me, which one do you select as teacher?" He abruptly picked up his staff and said, "Pierced through!"
