[The Master] cited: A monk asked Bajiao, "There is a person who does not abandon birth and death and does not realize nirvāṇa; does the master still guide him or not?" Bajiao said, "This mountain monk roughly knows good and bad." The Master said, "Although Bajiao knows good and bad, he cannot yet lead away the plowman's ox or snatch the hungry man's food. Today, if someone were to ask Changlu, I would strike him straight away along with the sound. Why so? I have never known good and bad."
