Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "With a single leap at the Dragon Gate, thunder rumbles. What is it like when rain drenches the universe?"
The Master said: "Have you passed through yet?"
The monk said: "It straightaway shakes heaven and overturns earth, fluttering its fins and wagging its tail."
The Master said: "You must have the skill of such a person before you can do so."
The monk said: "An ancient said: 'Nourished by the same rain, roots and sprouts differ.' What about when it is like this?"
The Master said: "You are bitter to the very core, like Chinese goldthread."
The monk said: "Having arrived here, I request the Master to offer a single word of instruction."
The Master said: "First, do not ask; second, do not stop."
The monk said: "The great chiliocosm shares the same moisture; the myriad things all flourish."
The Master said: "On the rootless tree, is there still any news or not?"
The monk said: "Where yin and yang do not reach, all the hundreds of grasses put forth shoots."
The Master said: "Only when it is like this will it do."
The Master then said: "The bellows of the true wind quietly pass along the beauty of spring; spring's kindness is just like this among the fragrant branches. Master Zhi was no idle monk; at the tip of his staff was a pair of scissors. We patch-robed monks, though without mind, can respond boundlessly; though having response, are precisely non-acting. Can you adapt and transform like this? Do not blame cold eyebrows and eyes when functioning ceases; why mind a warm heart and lungs when attaining application?"
