Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "When the wild goose crosses the vast sky, its shadow sinks in the cold water. The goose has no intention to leave a trace; the water has no mind to submerge the shadow. I wonder: how does one practice?"
The Master said: "A person of the Way without mind can be like this; before attaining no-mind, it is indeed very difficult."
The monk said: "On the bird's path there are no footprints; empty space is devoid of a single speck."
The Master said: "You are making intellectualizations again."
The monk said: "If one does not make intellectualizations, what then?"
The Master said: "Flawless jade originally has no blemish; carving patterns destroys the gentleman's virtue."
The Master then said: "Returning to the root, one attains the principle; when leaves fall, one knows autumn. Grasping the nostrils, one loses the tongue. Thoroughly illuminating the crown of the head of the buddhas of the three periods, seizing the throats of the ancestral masters of past generations. The jade well contains azure; the ice vase cuts off the flow. Taking the emptiness and silence of all phenomena as one's seat, at the place where one sits, one must not halt prisoners."
