Ascending the hall on New Year's Day, a monk asked, "Cold and heat take their turns; the new and the old succeed one another. How do you speak of the principle of non-shifting?" The Master said, "Last night was still the twelfth month; today we meet spring again." The monk said, "If so, then it has shifted away." The Master said, "You foolish fellow, what is this mortal urgency?" The monk said, "We also need everyone to know it is there." The Master said, "What is this affair of knowing it is there?" The monk said, "Willows by the embankment of yellow gold; plum blossoms at the crest of the white cloud ridge." The Master said, "You must still have sinews in your eyes before you can attain it!" The Master then said: "A head of white hair through how many springs? Only now do I believe that an idle body is like a foolish person. Letting go directly, make it smooth and secure; what Dharma could you further take to be sense bases and dust? When Dharmas are without sense bases and dust, the mind has neither inclination nor aversion. When the mind has neither inclination nor aversion, the Way accords with nature. When the Way accords with nature: every day is a good day, every year is a good year. The Lord of the East with ruler and shears cuts the flowering trees, entrusting them to the Chan of the staff over one's head."
