That evening, at an informal gathering, [the Master] cited: A monk asked Jiufeng, "When patriarchs transmit to patriarchs, what affair should be transmitted?" Jiufeng said, "Śākya is stingy, Kāśyapa is rich." The monk asked, "What is Śākya's stinginess?" Jiufeng said, "Not a single thing to give to people." The monk asked, "What is Kāśyapa's wealth?" Jiufeng said, "Lord Mengchang within the realm." The monk asked, "I wonder, what is the transmitted affair like?" Jiufeng said, "A hundred-year-old elder dividing the night lamp."
The Master said: "Everyone is fully endowed; each one is completely accomplished. Sometimes when it is lit, it does not arrive—neither can I do anything for you. Sometimes when it arrives, it is not lit—neither can I obstruct you. Venerable Zen practitioners! In the light, taking your place, completely cast off trivialities; in the dark, borrowing function, you yet add brilliance. Do you fully comprehend? The blue dragon sheds its bones as the moon turns into night; the dark leopard transforms its markings as the clouds play with fair weather."
