Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: A monk asked Caoshan, "When the son returns to the father, why does the father pay him no heed at all?" Caoshan said, "In principle, it should be like this." The monk asked, "Where is the grace between father and son?" Caoshan said, "Only then is the grace between father and son accomplished." The monk asked, "What is the grace between father and son?" Caoshan said, "Knives and axes cannot cleave it apart."
The Master said: "At the entrance to the bright moon path, atop the roof of the green mountain, taking a step back and turning function, sharing one body and a common life. Only when reaching here does one know the principle that knives and axes cannot cleave it apart. And how do you fully understand it? Do you understand? Illumination exhausted, the substance has nothing to rely on; the entire body merges with the Great Way."
