When the mirror of vast, vacant clarity is opened, its thorough illumination leaves nothing out; when the mechanism of the mysterious pivot is released, its true colors never miss the mark. Is it not thus with one who is endowed with the correct eye and equipped with a vast, surging eloquence? The Master dwelt below Mount Taibai, where dragons and elephants trampled and hammer and chisel struck; his words and ideas flowed expansively, never failing to be refined and precise. Whether scholars and commoners faithful to the Way knocked at his door to seek direction, or clouds and waters on their alms-rounds asked for his instruction, plain silk was laid before him, and he responded as his brush flew. Taking up their names, he gave discourse; following their inquiries, he replied. These are therefore made into his Dharma Words. Having picked out one or two, I have arranged them in order for the time being. Alas, the deep blue of the sky and the vastness of the flowing waters—one has never plumbed their utmost depth! For now, I merely record them here, waiting for those of wondrous accord and spiritual awakening to beat the rhythm and appreciate the tune.
