Attaining the skin and attaining the marrow, stages and gradations were forcibly established; stitching together leaves and stringing flowers, transmission and spreading were thereby brought about. A patch-robed monk sees right through this and faults the ancestral master for coming from the West to do so many things—producing branches outside of nodes, putting grit into the eyes. Moreover, there are those fellows who poke their heads out to perform endless tricks, notching the boat to find the sword; when will they ever attain attunement? Right now, directly let everything drop away; let everything be thoroughly exhausted, leaving not a hair, not a grain, not a speck behind. Once cleanly tidied away, there will naturally be a place of penetrating liberation. Round, unified, and bright, numinously penetrating and wondrous, you will know then that fundamentally nothing is lacking, nothing is left over. Words cannot reach it; seeing and hearing cannot attain it. It is like the rhinoceros horn communicating [with light], like the clam conceiving a pearl. This single stretch of clear radiance is one's own true ground of wandering and practice. Apply your energy to realize and embody it!
