上堂。人從平江來。却得福州信。寒食拜新年。虛空突出柄。咦。打破虛空笑不休。大家徹底驗聱頭。

Ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "Someone arrives from Pingjiang, yet receives a letter from Fuzhou. / Bowing for the New Year at the Cold Food Festival; / Empty space suddenly thrusts out a handle. / Ha! / Smashing empty space, laughing without pause; / Let us all thoroughly examine the stubborn fellow!"
