Formerly, when I collated the Recorded Sayings of Eihei together with his Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, throughout the two works, there were frequent references to 'my late master Tiantong,' which were the words of Chan Master Rujing. Mild as celestial jade, rugged like pig iron, they should only be treasured and loved, not chewed upon. Consequently, my wish to see the complete record had long been cherished. In the summer of this year, Senior Monk Chanshan brought two copies of his record. First producing one copy, he said: 'This is what my master, the old man Yunlong Yilin, preserved for a long time.' Then producing another copy, he said: 'This was held by my fellow practitioner, and he himself stated that during the days his master traveled widely, he personally transcribed it from a Tang [Chinese] manuscript. Now, having obtained two copies by chance, the time for collation has truly arrived; I pray that you, Master, will combine and correct them, and carve them for circulation.' Joyfully I received them, bowed, and chanted them: clanging dharma melodies, deep and elegant tones, vast and pleasing to the mind's ear! Just like the gandharva king playing a lapis lazuli lute: Sumeru leaps, the great ocean surges, and grasses, trees, and forests all emit the sounds of strings; the Golden Ascetic, without realizing it, rises and dances. Unfolding the two copies again, reflecting deeply and checking character by character, the copyists differed and each had strengths and weaknesses, so they could not be left uncorrected. Thereupon I separated water and milk at the knotted corners and complicated weave; picked out gold dust amidst uneven knives and twists; added Japanese marks and side glosses; and occasionally investigated deeds and events, writing them in fine script above—aiming to help beginners. Only after crossing into a second month was it completed. Chanshan's joy was unbounded: not only did he personally provide paper and brushes and painstakingly transcribe it, he directly delivered it to the printers for publication. His dedication to the Dharma may truly be called diligent! Thereupon, checking again the passages cited by Eihei, I found four or five out of ten; only then did I know that outside this record there is still much that has not been fully gathered. Formerly, Venerable Yuan of Ruiyan excerpted Eihei's Extensive Record, compiled it into one fascicle, and wrote an afterword saying he had obtained one-tenth of a hundred thousand; perhaps this too is but one-tenth of Tiantong? Surely there must be an Extensive Record existing; I only hope future worthy ones will diligently seek and gather it.
