Gathering his robes, he took his seat. He then struck the left side of the meditation bench with his whisk and said, "This one is host." Striking the right side, he said, "This one is guest. Great assembly, in former days I departed from the host to become the guest; today I come from the guest to become the host. Do you understand yet? / Coming and going without break, smiling with joyous cheer, / I am originally the old host of South Mountain. / Striking a circle with his whisk, he said, "The features are distinct." He raised his whisk again and said, "It transforms right in this place: a cow's head wears horns; a horse's feet tread with hooves; clouds follow the dragon, wind follows the tiger; myriad images leap and soar; the vast array of phenomena dance! That which is called blinding the eyes of humans and devas opens the eyes in brilliance; destroying the household of the Buddhas and Patriarchs makes their household shine with vitality; assisting the imperial capital's brocade of flowers, manifesting the pristine atmosphere of high antiquity; universally responding to all capacities, briefly according with the seasons. If we speak of the patch-robed monk's transcendence: before one even draws near, one is already separated by the great chiliocosm; to plow open great emptiness does not require a single mattock. Even granting it were so, one would still fall into the clumps of grass. What follows below would make the text too long; better to set it aside for now. Just tell me, what about the phrase 'knowing kindness and repaying kindness'? / The four seas and five lakes are clear as a mirror; / The Great Peace without traces honors the days of Yao."
