Ascending the hall: "Tiantong's first phrase of midwinter is craggy and jagged.
The old plum tree suddenly bursts into blossom:
one blossom, two blossoms, three, four, five blossoms, blossoms beyond count.
Their purity cannot be praised;
their fragrance cannot be praised.
Scattering into spring demeanor, they blow upon the grasses and trees;
patch-robed monks, each and every one has a bald crown.
Suddenly transforming into monstrosities—
raging winds and violent rains, even rolling across the great earth, snow drifts without bound.
The old plum tree is terribly unreasonable;
in the freezing cold, rubbing the nose leaves it aching."
