碧巖集行于世者數版。卷套多多。到上學徒盛笈非便也。故（予）欲成小字縮行省紙冊。有年所矣。安政丁巳秋。篤信檀士戮力捨財。喜資上木。即命剞劂氏。事既竣焉。喜捨刊梓製本賤價。固予初志也。若夫碧巖曲節。先哲序跋善美盡盡。（予）何言乎。簡省刻成。故書詹言於筴端。爾安政六年歲在己未秋七月初吉勅住華園玉桃菴主萬寧玄彙敬識。

Several editions of the Biyan ji circulate in the world. Their cases and fascicles are numerous, making it inconvenient for students to carry in their book-bags when traveling. Therefore, [I] have wished for years to produce a format with small characters and condensed lines to economize paper and volumes. In the autumn of the dingsi year of Ansei [1857], a devout lay patron united his efforts and gave wealth, joyfully sponsoring the woodblocks, whereupon I commissioned the carvers. The work being completed, joyfully giving for printing and bookmaking at a low price was indeed my original intent. As for the intricate nuances of the Blue Cliff, the prefaces and colophons of former sages have exhausted all excellence and beauty. What could [I] say? It was carved in an abridged format, so I write these few remarks at the head of the volume. Written reverently in the first decade of the seventh month in autumn of the jimi year, the sixth year of Ansei [1859], by Gen'i of Manning, abbot of the Gyokutō Hermitage at the imperial cloister Hanazono.
