"Master Lu has transmitted it, but on what can one rely?" What proof or reliance is there? You must directly understand it in just this way; do not wait by the tree trunk for the hare any longer. Shatter everything at once before your skull, without a single thing remaining in your heart; let yourself be clear and unattached—then what need is there for any reliance? Whether sitting or leaning, there is no need to make it into principles of the Buddha-Dharma. Therefore it is said: "Sitting or leaning, do not take it to continue the ancestral lamp." Xuedou has picked it all up at once. He has a place to turn about, and at the end he himself reveals an intimation, having a fine point in saying: "Fittingly facing evening clouds, which returning have not yet merged." Tell me, what was Xuedou's intent? At the moment when the evening clouds return, about to merge yet not having merged, what do you say? "The distant mountains, boundlessly green, layer upon layer." As before, he enters into the ghost cave. Once you reach here, gains and losses, right and wrong are severed at once, completely clear and unattached—only then are you somewhat close. "The distant mountains, boundlessly green, layer upon layer"—tell me, is this the realm of Mañjuśrī? Is it the realm of Samantabhadra? Is it the realm of Avalokiteśvara? Arriving here, tell me, whose province is this affair?
