3.26

【二六】舉。僧問百丈。如何是奇特事（言中有響。句裏呈機。驚殺人。有眼不曾見）丈云。獨坐大雄峯（凜凜威風四百州。坐者立者二俱敗缺）僧禮拜（伶俐衲僧。也有恁麼人。要見恁麼事）丈便打（作家宗師。何故來言不豊。令不虛行）。

[Case 26] Case: A monk asked Baizhang, "What is an extraordinary thing?" (Sound within speech. Revealing dynamic function within the phrase. Startling one to death. Having eyes, one has never seen it.)
Baizhang said, "Sitting alone on Great Hero Peak." (A chilling, awe-inspiring demeanor over four hundred prefectures. The one sitting and the one standing are both defeated and broken.)
The monk bowed. (A nimble patch-robed monk. There are also people like this. Wanting to see such a thing.)
Baizhang struck him. (An expert lineage master! Why are the coming words not rich? An authentic imperative is not carried out in vain.)
