4.46

【四〇】舉。陸亘大夫。與南泉語話次。陸云。肇法師道。天地與我同根。萬物與我一體。也甚奇怪（鬼窟裏作活計。畫餅不可充飢。也是草裏商量）南泉指庭前花（道恁麼。咄。經有經師論有論師。不干山僧事。咄。大丈夫當時下得一轉語。不唯截斷南泉。亦乃與天下衲僧出氣）召大夫云。時人見此一株花。如夢相似（鴛鴦綉了從君看。莫把金針度與人。莫寐語。引得黃鶯下柳條）。

Case: Grand Councilor Lu Gen was conversing with Nanquan. Lu said, “Master Zhao said, ‘Heaven and earth share the same root with me; the myriad things are of one body with me.’ This is truly extraordinary.” (Making a livelihood in a ghost cave; a painted rice cake cannot satisfy hunger; this too is deliberating in the grass.)
Nanquan pointed to a flower in the courtyard (Why speak like this? Bah! For sūtras there are sūtra masters; for śāstras there are śāstra masters; it does not concern this mountain monk. Bah! If a great man had produced a turning word at that moment, not only would he have cut off Nanquan, he would also have vented the outrage of the patch-robed monks of the world.)
and called to the Grand Councilor, saying, “People of the time see this single stalk of flower as though in a dream.” (Once the mandarin ducks are embroidered, let anyone look; do not pass the golden needle to others. Do not talk in your sleep; you lure the yellow oriole down to the willow twig.)
