【四二】舉。龐居士辭藥山（這老漢作怪也）山命十人禪客。相送至門首（也不輕他。是什麼境界。也須是識端倪底衲僧始得）居士指空中雪云。好雪片片不落別處（無風起浪指頭。有眼。這老漢言中有響）時有全禪客云。落在什麼處（中也。相隨來也。果然上鈎來）士打一掌（著。果然。勾賊破家）全云。居士也不得草草（棺木裏瞠眼）士云。汝恁麼稱禪客。閻老子未放汝在（第二杓惡水潑了。何止閻老子。山僧這裏也不放過）全云。居士作麼生（麤心不改。又是要喫棒。這僧從頭到尾不著便）士又打一掌（果然。雪上加霜。喫棒了呈欵）云眼見如盲。口說如啞（更有斷和句。又與他讀判語）雪竇別云。初問處但握雪團便打（是則是。賊過後張弓。也漏逗不少。雖然如是要見箭鋒相拄。爭奈落在鬼窟裏了也）。

[Case 42] Case: Layman Pang took leave of Yaoshan. (This old fellow makes strange trouble.) / Shan ordered ten Chan practitioners to see him off to the gate. (He does not treat him lightly. What kind of realm is this? One must be a patch-robed monk who recognizes the clues.) / The Layman pointed to the snow in the air and said, "Fine snow, flake by flake, not falling anywhere else." (Raising waves without wind. His fingertips have eyes. This old fellow has resonance in his words.) / At the time, Chan Practitioner Quan said, "Where does it fall?" (Hit! He follows along. Sure enough, he took the bait.) / The Layman gave him a slap. (Hit! Sure enough. Inviting a thief into the house.) / Quan said, "The Layman must not be careless!" (Staring wide-eyed in the coffin.) / The Layman said, "If you call yourself a Chan practitioner like this, Old Yama hasn't released you yet!" (A second ladle of foul water poured out. Not just Old Yama—this mountain monk here will not let you pass either.) / Quan said, "What about the Layman?" (His crude mind unchanged. Again asking for a beating. From beginning to end, this monk finds no advantage.) / The Layman gave him another slap, (Sure enough. Adding frost to snow. Having taken the beating, he submits his confession.) / saying, "The eyes see as if blind; the mouth speaks as if mute." (He even has a concluding verdict; again he reads him the judgment.) / Xuedou remarked differently: "At the initial question, he should have just balled up a lump of snow and struck him." (Granted, but that is drawing the bow after the thief has passed. It leaks quite a bit. Even so, one wants to see arrowheads meeting point-to-point. How can one help that it has fallen into the ghost cave?)
