雪竇劈頭便頌道。野鴨子知何許。且道有多少。馬祖見來相共語。此頌馬祖問百丈云。是什麼。丈云。野鴨子。語盡山雲海月情。頌再問百丈什麼處去。馬大師為他意旨自然脫體。百丈依前不會。却道飛過去也。兩重蹉過欲飛去。却把住。雪竇據欵結案。又云。道道。此是雪竇轉身處。且道。作麼生道。若作忍痛聲則錯。若不作忍痛聲。又作麼生會。雪竇雖然頌得甚妙。爭奈也跳不出。

Right at the start Xuedou versifies: "Wild ducks—where do they know to go?" Tell me, how many are there? "Mazu saw them coming and spoke with him:" this versifies Mazu asking Baizhang, "What is that?" and Zhang saying, "Wild ducks." "Exhausting completely the sentiments of mountain clouds and ocean moon:" this versifies asking Baizhang again, "Where have they gone?" Master Ma, for his sake, naturally shed his skin and bones. Baizhang, as before, did not understand, but said, "They have flown past"—a twofold blunder. "About to fly away, he pulls him back:" Xuedou concludes the case according to the confession. He also says, "Speak! Speak!" This is Xuedou's place of turning the body. Tell me: how to speak? If you make the sound of enduring pain, you are wrong; if you do not make the sound of enduring pain, how do you understand it? Although Xuedou has versified it very wondrously, what can he do? He too cannot leap free.
