【五一】舉。雪峯住庵時。有兩僧來禮拜（作什麼。一狀領過）峯見來。以手托庵門。放身出云。是什麼（鬼眼睛。無孔笛子。擎頭戴角）僧亦云。是什麼（泥彈子氈拍板。箭鋒相拄）峯低頭歸庵（爛泥裏有刺。如龍無足。似蛇有角。就中難為措置）僧後到巖頭（也須是問過始得。同道方知）頭問。什麼處來（也須是作家始得。這漢往往納敗闕。若不是同參。洎乎放過）僧云。嶺南來（傳得什麼消息來。也須是通箇消息。還見雪峯麼）頭云。曾到雪峯麼（勘破了多時。不可道不到）僧云。曾到（實頭人難得。打作兩橛）頭云。有何言句（便恁麼去也）僧舉前話（便恁麼去也。重重納敗闕）頭云。他道什麼（好劈口便打。失却鼻孔了也）僧云。他無語低頭歸庵（又納敗闕。爾且道他是什麼）頭云。噫我當初悔不向他道末後句（洪波浩渺白浪滔天）若向伊道。天下人不奈雪老何（癩兒牽伴。不必。須彌也須粉碎。且道他圈繢在什麼處）僧至夏末。再舉前話請益（已是不惺惺。正賊去了多時。賊過後張弓）頭云。何不早問（好與掀倒禪床。過也）僧云。未敢容易（這棒本是這僧喫。穿却鼻孔。停囚長智。已是兩重公案）頭云。雪峯雖與我同條生。不與我同條死（漫天網地）要識末句後。只這是（賺殺一船人。我也不信。洎乎分疎不下）。

Case 51: When Xuefeng was living in a hermitage, two monks came to pay respects. (What are they doing? One indictment accepted.) / Seeing them coming, Xuefeng pushed open the hermitage door with his hand, stepped out, and said, "What is it?" (Ghostly eyes. A hole-less flute. Brandishing a head and bearing horns.) / The monks also said, "What is it?" (A mud pill, a felt clapper. Arrow points meeting head-on.) / Xuefeng lowered his head and returned to his hermitage. (There are thorns in the soft mud. Like a dragon without feet, like a snake with horns. Within this it is difficult to deal with.) / Later, the monks went to Yantou. (He still had to question them thoroughly before knowing. Only those of the same path know.) / Yantou asked, "Where did you come from?" (One must indeed be an expert. This fellow often admits defeat. If not for a fellow practitioner, he would almost have let them off.) / The monk said, "We came from Lingnan." (What news did you bring? You must also communicate some news. Did you still see Xuefeng?) / Yantou said, "Did you ever go to Xuefeng?" (He saw through them long ago. You cannot say you did not go.) / The monk said, "We went." (An honest person is hard to find. Broken into two halves.) / Yantou said, "What words did he have?" (Going off like this!) / The monk related the previous story. (Going off like this! Admitting defeat over and over.) / Yantou said, "What did he say?" (He should be struck across the mouth right away. He has lost his nostrils.) / The monk said, "Without a word, he lowered his head and returned to his hermitage." (Again admitting defeat. Tell me, what was he?) / Yantou said, "Alas! Back then I regretted that I did not say the last word to him. (Boundless billows, white waves surging to heaven.) / If I had spoken it to him, no one in the world could do anything to Old Xue!" (A leper dragging along a companion. No need. Even Mount Meru must be smashed to powder. Tell me, where is his trap?) / At the end of the summer, the monk brought up the previous story again to ask for instruction. (Already not sharp. The real thief has been gone for a long time. Drawing the bow after the thief has passed.) / Yantou said, "Why didn't you ask earlier?" (He should overturn the meditation seat. An error!) / The monk said, "I did not dare take it lightly." (This blow should originally have been taken by this monk. Piercing his nostrils. Detaining a prisoner increases his wisdom. Already a double gong'an.) / Yantou said, "Although Xuefeng was born on the same bough as me, he will not die on the same bough as me. (Spreading a net over heaven and earth.) / If you want to know the last word, just this is it." (Deceiving a whole boat of people to death. I do not believe it either. He almost could not explain it away.)
