【五七】舉。僧問趙州。至道無難唯嫌揀擇。如何是不揀擇（這鐵蒺藜。多少人吞不得。大有人疑著在。滿口含霜）州云。天上天下唯我獨尊（平地上起骨堆。衲僧鼻孔一時穿却。金剛鑄鐵券）僧云。此猶是揀擇（果然隨他轉了也。拶著這老漢）州云。田厙奴。什麼處是揀擇（山高石裂）僧無語（放爾三十棒。直得目瞪口呿）厙（式夜切音含）。

[57] Case: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "'The Supreme Way is not difficult; it only dislikes picking and choosing.' What is non-picking and choosing?" (This iron caltrop—how many cannot swallow it! Many harbor doubts about it. A mouth full of frost.) Zhaozhou said, "Above heaven and below heaven, I alone am the honored one." (Piling up bones on level ground. Patch-robed monks' nostrils are pierced all at once. An iron tally cast from vajra.) The monk said, "This is still picking and choosing." (Indeed, he was turned around by him. Pressing this old fellow hard!) Zhaozhou said, "You rustic slave! Where is there picking and choosing?" (Mountains high, rocks splitting.) The monk was speechless. (Letting you off with thirty blows of the staff; he was left with staring eyes and gaping mouth.) [Note: 厙 is pronounced han, phonetic shiye.]
