[Case 59] Case: A monk asked Zhaozhou: "'The Great Way is not difficult; it only disdains choosing and picking.'
(Brought forward again. What is he saying? A three-layer gong'an.)
As soon as there are words and speech, that is choosing and picking.
(His whole mouth filled with frost.)
How do you instruct people, Venerable?"
(Pressing this old fellow hard. Ha!)
Zhaozhou said: "Why do you not quote this phrase to the end?"
(A thief is a petty person whose cleverness exceeds a gentleman's. A daylight thief. Riding the thief's horse to pursue the thief.)
The monk said: "I only recite up to here."
(Two fellows playing with mud balls. Meeting a thief. Having set up the target, it is hard to match an opponent.)
Zhaozhou said: "It is just this: 'The Great Way is not difficult; it only disdains choosing and picking.'"
(In the end it is up to this old fellow. Having had his eyes switched by him, he is captured and defeated!)
