黃巢過後曾收劍。大笑還應作者知。雪竇便頌這僧與巖頭大笑處。這箇些子。天下人摸索不著。且道他笑箇什麼。須是作家方知。這笑中有權有實。有照有用。有殺有活。三十山藤且輕恕。頌這僧後到雪峯面前。這僧依舊莽鹵。峯便據令而行。打三十棒趕出。且道為什麼却如此。爾要盡情會這話麼。得便宜是落便宜。

"After Huang Chao passed through, he once retrieved the sword; the great laughter must still be known by an adept." Xuedou then versified this monk and Yantou's great laughter. This slight point is something no one in the world can grope out. Tell me, what was he laughing at? Only an adept can know. In this laughter, there is the provisional and the real, illumination and function, killing and giving life. "Thirty blows of mountain rattan are, for the moment, a lenient pardon" versifies that this monk later came before Xuefeng. This monk was crude and reckless as before; Xuefeng then acted according to the authentic imperative, struck him thirty blows, and drove him out. And tell me, why was it like this? If you wish to understand these words thoroughly: to gain an advantage is to lose an advantage.
