[Case 74] Case: Whenever it came to mealtime, Master Jinniu would personally bring the rice bucket, dance in front of the monks' hall, and with a great guffaw of laughter say, "Bodhisattva-children, come eat rice!" (The line and hook at the pole's tip: let you handle it as you will. Not stirring the clear waves, the meaning is distinct of itself. Ghee and poison administered at once. True enough, the seven treasures and eight jewels are all laid out at once; but alas, how few meet with it!) Xuedou said, "Although this is so, Jinniu did not have a good mind." (A thief recognizes a thief; an adept recognizes an adept. One who comes to speak of right and wrong is precisely the person of right and wrong.) A monk asked Changqing, "The ancient said, 'Bodhisattva-children, come eat rice!' What was the meaning?" (Well may you doubt it. All along he did not know where it landed. What did Changqing say?) Changqing said, "It is much like celebrating and praising on the occasion of a feast." (Matching the table, carrying out the order; settling the case based on the confession.)
