8.18

白雲影裏笑呵呵。長慶道。因齋慶讚。雪竇道。兩手持來付與他。且道只是與他喫飯。為當別有奇特。若向箇裏知得端的。便是箇金毛獅子子。若是金毛獅子子。更不必金牛將飯桶來作舞大笑。直向三千里外。便知他敗缺處。古人道。鑒在機先。不消一揑。所以衲僧家。尋常須是向格外用始得稱本分宗師。若只據語言。未免漏逗。

"Within the shadows of white clouds, laughing with a great guffaw." Changqing said, "Celebrating and praising on the occasion of a feast." Xuedou said, "Holding it with both hands, he brings it and hands it over to them." Tell me: is he merely giving them rice to eat, or is there something extraordinary? If in this place you know the reality, then you are a child of the golden-haired lion. If one is a child of the golden-haired lion, there is no need for Jinniu to bring the rice bucket, dance, and laugh loudly; directly from three thousand leagues away, one already knows his flaw. An ancient said, "Discernment precedes dynamic function; it does not take a single pinch." Therefore, patch-robed monks normally must act outside the pattern before they can be called proper lineage masters. If you only rely on verbal expressions, you will inevitably leak.
