【七八】舉。古有十六開士（成群作隊。有什麼用處。這一隊不唧𠺕漢）於浴僧時隨例入浴（撞著露柱。漆桶作什麼）忽悟水因（惡水驀頭澆）諸禪德作麼生會。他道妙觸宣明（更不干別人事。作麼生會他。撲落非他物）成佛子住（天下衲僧到這裏摸索不著。兩頭三而作什麼）也須七穿八穴始得（一棒一條痕。莫辜負山僧好。撞著磕著。還曾見德山臨濟麼）。

[78] Case: In antiquity there were sixteen bodhisattvas. (Gathering in flocks and herds—what use is it? This bunch of clumsy fellows!) When the monks bathed, they entered the bath according to routine, (Colliding with the exposed pillar. What are you doing in a lacquer tub?) and suddenly awakened to the cause of water. (Foul water poured straight over the head!) How do you Chan worthies understand it? They said, "The wondrous touch was manifested with clarity, (It has nothing to do with others anymore. How do you understand them? Falling down, it is no other thing!) and we attained the stage of sons of the Buddha." (Patch-robed monks throughout the world cannot fathom it here. What are you doing with two ends and three faces?) One must also be pierced through seven times and eight times before one can attain it. (With each blow of the staff a welt. You had better not let down this mountain monk. Bumping into it and striking against it—did you ever see Deshan and Linji?)
