9.18

咄這維摩老（咄他作什麼。朝打三千暮打八百。咄得不濟事。好與三十棒）悲生空懊惱（悲他作什麼。自有金剛王寶劍。為他閑事長無明。勞而無功）
臥疾毘耶離（因誰致得。帶累一切人）
全身太枯槁（病則且置。為什麼口似匾擔。飯也喫不得。喘也喘不得）
七佛祖師來（客來須看。賊來須打。成群作隊。也須是作家始得）
一室且頻掃（猶有這箇在。元來在鬼窟裏作活計）請問不二門（若有可說。被他說了也。打云。和闍黎。也尋不見）
當時便靠倒（蒼天蒼天。道什麼）
不靠倒（死中得活。猶有氣息在）金毛獅子無處討（咄。還見麼。蒼天蒼天）

"Bah! This old Vimalakīrti, (Why 'Bah' him? Three thousand blows in the morning, eight hundred in the evening; saying 'Bah' does no good—thirty blows of the staff should be given!) / Out of compassion, emptily gives rise to grief. (Why pity him? One naturally has the precious sword of the Vajra King; increasing ignorance over someone else's idle business—laboring without achievement.) / He lies ill in Vaiśālī, (Brought about because of whom? Implicating all people.) / His whole body utterly emaciated. (Put illness aside for a moment; why is his mouth like a shoulder-pole? He cannot eat rice, and he cannot draw breath.) / When the ancestral master of the seven Buddhas came, (When a guest comes, one must attend to him; when a thief comes, one must beat him. Flocking in groups, one must indeed be an adept to handle it.) / The single room was swept again and again. (This still remains! So it turns out he was making a living in a ghost cave.) / When asked about the non-dual gate, (If there were anything that could be said, he had already said it. Striking, he said, "Venerable Sir, it cannot be found either.") / At that moment he was leaned against and knocked down. (Heavens, heavens! What did he say?) / Not leaned against and knocked down— (Gaining life amid death; breath still remains.) / Nowhere to search for the golden-haired lion." (Bah! Do you still see it? Heavens, heavens!)
