[Case 67] Case: Emperor Wu of Liang invited Mahāsattva Fu to lecture on the Diamond Sūtra.
(Bodhidharma's brother has arrived! It might pass in fish markets and wine shops, but under the gate of patch-robed monks, it is impermissible. This old fellow, so old and grand, acts like this!)
The Mahāsattva then, on his seat, struck the desk once, and immediately stepped down from the seat.
(Directly causing sparks of fire to burst forth. Seeming like it, it resembles it, but is not yet it. No need to entangle with vines.)
Emperor Wu was astonished.
(Twice, thrice deceived by others. It also leaves him unable to grope it out.)
Master Zhi asked, "Does Your Majesty understand?"
(Siding with principle, not with personal affection. The elbow does not bend outward. It would be right to give him thirty blows as well.)
The Emperor said, "I do not understand."
(What a pity!)
Master Zhi said, "The Mahāsattva has finished lecturing on the sūtra."
(He should also be expelled from the country to begin with! At that time, driving out Master Zhi together with him from the country at the same time—that would be an adept. Two fellows in the same pit, no different earth.)
