[Case 88] Case: Xuansha addressed the assembly and said, "The venerable masters in all quarters all speak of receiving people and benefiting living beings. (Opening a shop according to one's means; lavish or frugal according to the household.) If suddenly three kinds of sick people come, how will you receive them? (Beating the grass just to frighten the snakes. This mountain monk's eyes are staring blankly and his mouth is wide open; he will surely retreat three thousand miles.) To the blind, you hold up a mallet or raise a whisk, but they do not see. (Truly blind! To be sure, receiving people and benefiting living beings—they may not fail to see. ) To the deaf, with the samādhi of words, they do not hear. (Truly deaf! To be sure, receiving people and benefiting living beings—they may not be deaf. Who is it that has not heard?) To the mute, you tell them to speak, but they cannot speak. (Truly mute! To be sure, receiving people and benefiting living beings—they may not be mute. Who is it that has not spoken?) How will you receive them? If you cannot receive these people, the Buddha Dharma has no spiritual efficacy." (True indeed are these words! This mountain monk folds his hands and surrenders. He has already received them. Then he strikes.)
A monk asked Yunmen for instruction. (He wants all quarters to know as well. A hit.)
Yunmen said, "Make your prostrations." (When the wind blows, the grass bends. Bah!)
The monk finished prostrating and rose. (This monk snaps the staff.)
Yunmen thrust at him with his staff; the monk stepped back. Yunmen said, "You are not blind." (Truly blind! Better not say this monk is blind.)
He called him closer again. The monk came forward. (A second ladle of foul water poured out. Guanyin has arrived! At that moment, he should have been given a shout.)
Yunmen said, "You are not deaf." (Truly deaf! Better not say this monk is deaf.)
Yunmen then said, "Do you understand?" (Why not give him his proper measure of fodder? At that moment, better not make a sound.)
The monk said, "I do not understand." (A double gong'an. Heavens, heavens!)
Yunmen said, "You are not mute." (Truly mute! Mouth babbling away. Better not say this monk is mute.)
At this, the monk had an awakening. (Drawing the bow after the thief has fled. What bowl are you looking for?)
瞪: Pronounced like *deng* [dèng]; staring fixedly with angry eyes.
呿: Pronounced like *qu* [qū]; the appearance of opening the mouth.
挃: Pronounced like *zhi* [zhì]; the sound of colliding with emptiness.
