舉。臺山路上有一婆子（傍城庄家夾道兔）凡有僧問。臺山路向什麼處去（一生行脚去處也不知）婆云。驀直去（未當好心）僧纔行（著賊也不知）婆云。好箇阿師又恁麼去也（爾早侯白）僧舉似趙州（人平不語）州云。待。與勘過（水平不流）州亦如前問（陷虎之機）至來日上堂云。我為汝勘破婆子了也（我更侯黑）。

Case: On the road to Mount Tai there was an old woman. (A villager beside the town; a hare caught between roads.) / Whenever a monk asked, 'Which way is the road to Mount Tai?' (A lifetime of wandering, yet not knowing where he is going.) / the old woman would say, 'Go straight ahead.' (Not bearing good intentions.) / As soon as the monk walked on, (He does not even know he has been robbed.) / the woman would say, 'A fine master, off he goes like that too!' (You are outsmarted already.) / A monk raised this to Zhaozhou. (When a person is fair, he does not speak.) / Zhou said, 'Wait, I will go and check her out for you.' (When water is level, it does not flow.) / Zhou also asked as before. (A trap to catch a tiger.) / Coming to the hall the next day, he said, 'I have checked out the old woman for you.' (I'll outsmart you even further.)
