The Master said: Xuedou's verse on this monk's question, "Is this one destroyed or not?", says: "The patch-robed monk still lingers at a double barrier." The opening of Tiantong's verse says, "Destroyed or not destroyed?" His intention is different: he raises both monks' questioning points, and gathers together both masters' answers, bringing them before us all at once. Only "It goes along with it; the great chiliocosm" takes up Dasui's words, bringing out the hooks and lines of the two masters and pointing out the two monks chasing after the clod. Yunju gave an instruction to the assembly, saying: "Words are like boring, like pincers, like hooks, like latches; one must make them continuous and unbroken for it to work." Now, versifying the answers of the two masters, it is straightforward and direct without dealing in trifles; but alas, everywhere monks have already been tripped up by entangling vines! Zhen Dianxiong was once a guest under Chan Master Zheng of Zhangjiang Temple in Nanchang. One day, pulling up his robes and exposing his shins, he walked past with slow steps. Zheng found it strange and questioned him. Zhen said, "The front gallery and rear frame are all entangling vines; I am just afraid of being tripped up." Zheng laughed heartily at this. Tiantong says: "When I versify it so clearly, do you understand or not?" If one is an adept of long practice, it is like transacting business within the trade, requiring no bargaining. Today Wansong only manages to startle you away from home.
